Day 10 Sunday, Nov 16 Blog Carib 1500

It’s high noon and Nyanza continues toward her destination of Tortola. At 0600 hours this morning we were at 2003w/6505n  Winds out of the East at 20 with a single reef in Main and the Jib now up and pulling open about 75 %. We came out of the night with heavy seas/disoriented with squalls early going to clear with the full moon  for the rest of the night. As the last nights since Sherry fell we have been pulling two hour nights for four nights with no autopilot. Not fun......

 

Morning brings a respirited crew with  Jamie helping get out the # 2 reef taking it back to the #1 with a five foot short batten sorta holding up the leech in the number 2 pocket. Along with that Jamie ythis morning went up to the bow to put five more wraps on the roller furler so it would bring in the sail all the way when we finish late tonight.

 

Report on our injured Sherry.....she is moving around cautiously, sucking down ibupropfen ......cooking lunch...chicken salad sandwiches etc...she reports to her kids “Women have an extra rib anyway...all is well , just very sore”.

 

As we speak at 1300 hrs atl on Sunday we are 63nm miles from the finish and expect to arrive at the finish at approximately 2300hrs tonight. At that point our crew will be proud to say “I have done the Carib 1500...for us it was a rally to remember....short crew, injuries, stretched tolerances, wonderful bow work  by Jamie Taylor( All black and Blue) ...lack of sleep...and a great boat that stood the test of pounding and seas NYANZA. The stars and stripes were swept away and we will have a ceremony this afternoon at 1500hrs with  a Mont Gay salute as a new US flag is deployed for the cruise.

 

Sorry we have not communicated more but this has been all work with little free time. After it ends there will  be wonderful stories, pictures and memories that will last forever.

 

Everyone will be checking home after we finis in the am . Time for lunch....Chicken Salad Sandwiches

 

Today we are flying toward the finish with reefed main (held up by Spin Halyard) and Roller furled jib at 80%....going at 165 Degrees in 22knots of wind banging out

7-8 Knots of boat speed. A beautiful day with 12’ rolling seas that have finally become normal and stretched out from the east. Figures, our race is almost over.
