Race Day 1 Saturday July 16

07/16/11 RACE DAY
Out to the checkin in front of Navy Pier with 3 or 4 thousand people to review the boats as they check-in by passing a committee boat. Over the PA we hear the history of NYANZA’s name being broadcast over the Pa. Pretty neat.
Well we started at 1200…noon..Division 8….we had a great start, chute up off to Manitou cut.. 137 nm away. It’s a beautiful day and we are going about 4 knots in a light breese out of the SE.
Jim Whistler went to the Commanders Weather breefing where we learned that for two days we would be going downwind as the wind moves from SE to SW by Sunday noon.
Ham slammers for Lunch with the Chicken Casserole sitting out to thaw for dinner. About 5PM we went to light the stove and could not get any propane to come thru. John Zurn and JT changed out a selonoid only to find out that Dave Block had turned off a valve we never use. At 8PM the Nyanza Crew had a fabulous dinner….wonderful Chicken and Broccoli casserole, mixed salad, and bread.
After dinner we are moving North with the SE wind at about 5nm per hour. PFD’s safety jackets and flashlights ready to go. Into the night.
