A Day in Annapolis...Thursday, 09/19/08:


A happening at Sarles..........The hauling of the wood yacht “Dutchess” was the big event for the day. Pictures on the blog. This wonderful 1921 wood boat needed a paint job and had been brought over the night before to go up the railway at Sarles. Only railway left in Annapolis.

At 8 am the yard manager, Jim Kavle with his new yard owner Bev Smith looking on with many other spectators and wood boat enthusiasts started the process of pulling the boat.

Jim and his helper setup the boat as far back as they could on the rail and then ran the car down into the water with a line to get under the boat. Unfortunately there was way to much overhang on the stern and Sarles could not haul the boat. It came up the way until they all decided it was to back heavy. Then back into the water.

The rail is very important for wood boats since you cannot haul them with a travel lift because you can crush the bulkheads of these old boats.

So much for that.....oh by the way...Jim Kavle sailed with Dennis Connor on the winning Stars and Stripes in the Americas Cup as a grinder. A big Man.

About 10 am Andy Fegley showed up and we went out to the Severn River by the Naval Academy and calibrated the autopilot and ran it. Worked great.

After lunch at the Boatyard, Tim Mehl, JT McBrier and I stopped over to UK/Allan sailmakers to say Hi to Scott Allan, the owner. He and his wife Kathy have always been a friend to me when I come to Annapolis. Scotts Dad and Mom went to Stanford with my parents and kept up there friendship for years. Scott has a large loft with many services.

As for dinners..........McGarreys had some wonderful huge plates of mussels for $5....
Then had a great steak sandwich to finish it off. Chart House was good too...very crowded but a great view of the Annapolis Yacht Club.

Oh I did not mention the Boathouse which is the sailors hangout for lunch and dinner over in Eastport. Had a good rare roast beef sandwich.

Tomorrow we head for St Michaels..................I am sure we will have a happening to report........We are going to check out the new autopilot that Andy installed on our way over.
