August trip to Put in Bay

08/07/13 Nyanza is motor sailing as I write this at 7.2K on a great 90 degree reach along the Lake Erie Shore looking at the huge Nuclear Power Plant off Madison Ohio. A pretty day with myself, Rich Merwin and Helina Kolanda, his friend from Fort lauderdale.

It was a one week trip up to the bay as I took my boat person for the summer, Greg Eddins, and engineering student at Penn State Behrend and his girlfriend Terese Borowy. Leaving on July 30th we ran to Astabula Ohio where we stayed at the AHYC. Passing thru the very old lift bridge brings back years of such for me . Bridge was built in 1890's.

Called my good friend Ren Carlisle and TOny and went over to dinner at their house. Learned a nd saw Ford and Claire....they are twins and each starts college this yeara Ford at Northwestern and Claire at Tulane...really great kids.

07/31/13 On we went to Greg's uncles club...Shoreby Club east of Cleveland ...great little harbor aand club....don't try to get out of this club with a big NW wind blowing. Dangerous entrance close to shore. Had dinner ith Bill Masters his uncle, a plaintiff medical Lawyer who lives in the complex.
Great guy...had dinner at a place called Grovewood Tavern....good food in a tough neighborhood.
Wonderful host ..thanks for the dinner Bill.

08/01/13 Shoreby to Put in Bay...uphill slug for 11 hours........made it around 1900 hours .....

Saturday and Sunday I raced in ILYA regatta on an old 41' boat with a very weak crew. Needless to say we did not do well but by the second day I had them sailing a lot better and organized.
Name of the boat was Revolution..a 1973 Norlin with a hard chine. Needs work.

Richard and Helina showed up on Sunday night and we spent Monday seeing the Battle of lake Erie Monument and a golf cart tour of the Island. Dinner at the Boardwalk and on to Mentor Harbor on Tuesday we leave for Mentor Harbor...trip was cut short due to some issues in ERie. We were going to go over to Vermillion and eat at Chez Francois...a great french Restaurant. Instead off to MHYC. Arriving after a great motor sail around 1830 hours ...cocktails with a walk up to see George and Susie Hays ....great friends.....susie was married to Frank Zurn and Jane and I spent part of our honeymoon on the Kahili in Mackinaw Island and down to Port Huron......dinner at MHYC ..very good....Susie and George showed up for a drink and we retired for the evening.

Up at 6:30 and out of Mentor at 0730. Knowing there are some big storms behind us I wanted to get a quick start......so here weare with an eta in erie of 1700 hrs.... It was a great trip with my good friend Rich.....Greg and Terese had fun...special for them .. Your Captain Jim...blue boat.....lake Erie....you got it NYANZA. (photos to follow in pic section)
