06/27/15 A WILD INTERCLUB GETS STARTED…..A Broken Boom…a
fantastic recovery to race…heavy weather….Wild.
This year we had a great crew…..Captain Jim and his two boys
James t and David along with our Fort Lauderdale visiting captain Sherry
Burger, Kevin Gregory from Buffalo ( I sail with him in St Thomas every
winter), Tim Mehl, Dick Robertson with Bob Becker and Mike Preston on board for
the Saturday Boom Bust.
Race 1 It was blowing
25 on Staurday so the Rcae committee decided to sail in the Bay. Gusts to 30.
Modified Gold Cup. Start at lighthouse at EYC..east to M1 over to the channe to
new lake back to lighthouse and up and back. Nyanza was flying….no seas…..tons
of wind. In the lead and coming to the finish with the 90% big N spinnaker up
we tried to jibe to finish, pole would not release, topping lift drops, spin in
the water trailing boat..puff hits, boat tries to jibe but the preventor was
on. It snapped the boom! Huge loads..Lucky we had a preventor or the boom
coming over would have killed someone. Heard nothing…I was looking at the chute
in the water as we tried to retrieve it. Took line honors and a 1st
Place overall but how could we go to
