06/27/15 LAKE ERIE INTERCLUB Miracles never cease! Raven also broke her boom but
unbenounced to us she had a spare at home. We immediately realized we could not
repair this on Saturday……
How about calling John Dauer (Rigger in Mentor) …….The boom
we had had been discarded at Tartan before. John thought that he had just taken
the same boom profile off a boat at Tartan that might work. My great Boys, Jim
and David took off with the Suburban, a trailor with the broken boom and headed
for Mentor. John talked to Tim Jacket and we got the boom. But much work needed
to be done….Oh we had a few other problems…….One batten lost…Bat Car
destroyed…….no spare bat car……tear in Main……(Thanks Bill Hertle and Mike
Preston for going to Bills house and stitching it up). By the time 8PM rolled
around JT and David arrived back at the boat. Boom a foot and a half t long but
so what, it will work. At 11 PM all back together for the run to Port Dover….We
start at 5:50 and NOAA is predicting heavy air on the nose to dover.
06/28/15 Erie to Port Dover (38NM)…….It’s a miracle…..no one
could believe that Nyanza was going up the bay! Tok 15 tacks to clear thru the
Channel…we got thru real well ahead of the big fleet behind us….oh by the way
we started 62 boats this year in the 58th running of the Interclub
Cruise……sailing at 10 degrees to Long Point we were a little too far west.
Rounded at 1100 hours…stripped to a number 3 and a reef and close beat up into
the Bay. Very wet and wind around 25 early. Ended up getting light but finished
with a three after a tack. Position 1st in class, 7th
overall.
Everyone being exhausted from two days of rain and wind, but
also the physical time of getting a boom ready to go…..Bob Becker and Mike
Preston were great extra help along with Dick Robertson, Kevin G and my two boys. A real team effort and a
well deserved dinner was held at the Erie Beach for Perch that night. Sorry all
the Nyanza crew that helped could not be there.
06/29/15 Longpoint Bay Course Race………it was the classic
Turkey Point Race until the wind crapped out…….Nyanza started well…did the
shore lift program and got up to Turkey Point in a great position only to have
the wind start dying…..rounded probably 10th, put up the BIG N chute
and started toward Tecumseh Reef Mark with the wind dying the RC shortened
course….kiss of death for Nyanza…wind filled in from the back and that’s that
for winning the overall this year…finished 4th in class…23
overall…(Continue to miss our traditional crew of Beans Becker and Bill Lillis
as we stay at the Brandt Hill and enjoy perch from the perch fry at DYC on the
Boat…great band this year….we had Sabotage (Jim Magee, my friend who has passed
aways dock. Spent some time with Scotty from Dover talking about Magee)
06/30/15 Dover to Post Colborne…….a down wind start in 12
knots took the rumbline and could could not shake Horizon (Bill Braun from
Vermillion and BCC) …it’s a Sabre 38….we beat him in class last year…this year
he won. Wind went lighter and we tried the A sail…learning how to fly it….wind
died and they shortened course aagain……Lost to Horizon…2nd in Class,
12 overall. (Tim Mehl was sick, rode down to Colbornew with Heather McB so he
could sail Wednesday)
Good party at Port Colborne with a new addition ….Asian
food…it was good and the band was fair……everyone tired. . Stayed at our normal
B&B
07/01/15 CANADA
DAY………Race down to Waverly Shoal and back to Abino……Windy..Erie Gregory joined
the crew……boy did we need her. She and david did some great foredeck work.
Building as we go down course…have the BigN up and the #1 on the furler……bad
call…big waves, thought we needed to power thru waves…great heavy air takedown
at Waverly blowing 23knots. Up wind , on
our ear Tacking…..did real well considering…….almost had a major P/S collision
with Blue Heron/Tartan 41 never got out of our way and then tacked on top of
us. Near Miss. He thought we were letting him thru….had a small boat guy
watching…..not good….Sailed alongside Enchanted, a Hinckley 40 that Charlie O
was on. Beautiful. Finish 1st class …5 overall.
Final results for the
series 2nd in Class 7th overall………conclusion hard and
expensive Hinckley Racing but had my boys and friends on board….that’s all that
counts and no one was injured….Captain Jim.
