NYANZA wins class Falcon Cup 2010

08-16-10 After taking a great three day trip up the Lake to the Cleveland Yacht Club Nyanza made a great showing again in the 78 year old Falcon Cup run from Cleveland Yacht Club to Mentor harbor Yacht Club...a distance of 27 miles. Nyanza covered the course in 4 hours and ten minutes and averaged about 6.6 nmph.

On the way up stopped at the Ashabula Yacht Club...a 40 mile meander up the lake motoring on a hot muggy Tuesday. Had dinner with great friends Tony and Ren Carlisle at there house. Ren was the CEO of Carlisles... a great department store of the past..Today he and Tony run a store called the Carlisle Home Store down in the harbor next to the bridge...a fun shop...sells wine and other gourmet items.....
There three kids Tyler getting ready to go to College, the twins Claire and Ford keep the two busy...Big Soccor Family.

Stopped at mentor Harbor on Wednesday night where we returned the Falcon Cup from the EYC and had a nice time with cocktails with George and Susie Hays......great sailors taking it easy....a major Zurn Family reunion was being held there on Sunday...I ran into Douglas Zurn...a major Nautical Architect...

Now let me tell you about the race.....Had a great crew of three fathers and son's....Captain "Fun" Dunn and Will, Tim Mehl and David in from NY City...our derivitives trader at Merrill and guest small boat driver, Captain Jim and David along with Dr. John Goldberg (Laura Dunns Husband), Will Collins and the Lizzard..

We started out with wind gusty out of the south 15-18...only boat to put up a chute...the new 1 1/2oz chicken chute (85%of normal size)...was running great until we took a roundup and when it was let out some how it trailed right thru the winch and gone....you know way out to sea......lazy guy was not tied down.....fire drill..
Rounded up three times in order to snag it. Probably cost us 2 minutes messing around....caught back up to our fleet and off we went....half way up the course we were still only one of 3-4 boats flying chutes......weather cell went away and the wind came down.....chute down...jib open...close reach fast again to the finish.

Nyanza loves wind on here quarter and always does well in this condition. One more time the new main and jib combination were very fast. The Doyle main is the best I have ever had....check out the picture....don't look at the batten coming out.....
when it got light we got it back into the pocket.

Final results NYANZA wins Class D for the second year in a row and I think finished 7th overall out of 60 boats....and the Falcon Cup stayed in Mentor.
Great friends, great crew, great boat.....what more could I say on an 80 degree hot day going 10 at one point in the day!!!

Today is Aug 16...one month before the new double knees for the Captain...forgot to mention also that Nyanza got a new tender...Rett Walkers 19' Boston Whaler Rampage with a 150 Johnson has just joined the McBrier Family of Boats. Our first real powerboat...and David races the J22Nationals in Buffalo this weekend..go David!!!
